Devizes 1 v Penryn
Posted by Becky Sedgwick on 21 November 2013
Making the long trip to Cornwall, Devizes bounced back to winning ways in the Southwest Regional League 3 after their defeat last weekend by top of the table Abbey Meads.
Facing an opposition with a strong home line up, Devizes’ pre-match preparation paid off as they closed down Penryn’s strong and experienced goal attack, forcing errors from the Cornish team. Devizes took full advantage of the turnovers they created with well-timed movement through the court to be converted by their shooters. Goal attack Hannah Sedgwick was on fantastic form, converting from all ranges under strong pressure from the Penryn defence and at half time the visitors led by eight goals.
In response, the home team introduced a new goal shooter at half time; however, the Devizes defence, led by player of the match Jo Worrall, adjusted quickly and began to dominate the circle. Excellent through court pressure presented more chances for the accurate Devizes’ shooters who extended their lead to 13 goals at three-quarter time.
A lack of concentration and match sharpness following the long trip, coupled with a strong response from the home side, made for an edgy final quarter as Penryn staged a comeback, but the work done early on paid dividends as Devizes held on to win 41-35. Four wins out of five games sees Devizes sitting comfortably in mid-table approaching the halfway point of the season, and confident of further success as this young team continues its rapid improvement.
